Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special: James Gunn unwraps new details

I hope you've been a good boy or girl this year because the Guardians of the Galaxy are getting ready to film their own holiday special. Marvel Studios last year revealed plans for its Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and now James Gunn is here to unwrap some details about what to expect.

Gunn recently spoke with Collider's own Steve Weintraub about his plans for the holiday-themed presentation, airing exclusively on Disney+. During their talk, the director revealed that the special serves as a lead-in to the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“It’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great I’m really happy with it,” said Gunn about the events of the upcoming special.

Gunn also confirmed that filming the holiday special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place simultaneously. Both projects are scheduled to kick off in November, with cameras ready to roll in Georgia.

“I’m gonna film it at the same time as the movie," Gunn explained. "I’m using a lot of the same sets, the same actors obviously, so we’re filming simultaneously with the film but it’s gonna have to be edited and finished sooner.”

In terms of runtime, Gunn revealed that he expects the holiday special to be less than 40 minutes in length – with plans to release the short film on Disney+ in December 2022. Main cast members confirmed for the special so far include Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff.

How much do you want to bet that Gunn manages to include Santa Claus, Krampus, or even the Christmas Spirit…of Vengeance in his Guardians holiday special? Maybe Ben Grimm and Kitty Pride stop by to spread some Chanukah cheer? Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but I'm hoping for great things.
