Grey’s Anatomy isn’t going anywhere folks, as ABC has just announced the record-breaking run of the medical drama will continue with its season 19 renewal. The show’s leading lady, Ellen Pompeo, has also signed a new one-year deal to continue as the show’s title character.
Included in Pompeo’s new deal is also a promotion as producer. The actress was a co-executive producer on the show but she has now been upped to an executive producer for season 19, per “Deadline.” Fellow executive producer Krista Vernoff will remain at the top as showrunner. It should be noted that ABC didn’t announce the renewal as the final season of the series so, as of now, there is no end in sight for the long-running ABC staple.
As we previously reported, conversations were in the very early stages back in December for the show to return. They began their talks with Pompeo during this period and, even though she has been open about her desire to bring the show to an end for the last couple of years, it looks like they gave her a reason to stay on. Pompeo’s contract was up at the end of season 17, along with two other remaining original cast members, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. They reportedly signed multi-year pacts to stay on the series so they’re secured while Pompeo had to be convinced to commit for another year.
Despite being on for 18 seasons, the series remains the network’s highest-rated scripted show and it’s one of the top scripted series on network television. On top of all of this, Grey’s Anatomy makes a huge profit for Disney and it gives a significant boost to its spinoff Station 19 by integrating the universe with frequent crossovers. Because of this, Station 19 is ABC’s second-highest-rated scripted series after Grey’s Anatomy. The series is also still huge on streaming, often finishing in the top ten throughout the year on Netflix for viewership.
