With Warner Bros. Discovery shelving the nearly finished Batgirl movie, you’d be forgiven for feeling anxious about the fate of other DC projects in development at the studio. One of those projects is a live-action Green Lantern series on HBO Max. We haven’t heard all that much about the Green Lantern series lately, which has fans wondering if it’s still in the works.
An HBO Max spokesperson told TVLine that the Green Lantern series is still “very much alive” and “definitely moving forward.” Penned by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith, the series will reinvent the classic comic book and tell a story “spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.” Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) will star as Alan Scott alongside Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) as Guy Gardner. While the series is still on track, TVLine hears it may not be released until 2024. Berlanti, who will also executive produce alongside Grahame-Smith and Guggenheim, has previously teased that the series will be the “biggest DC show ever made.“
As for the other DC series in development at HBO Max, we recently learned that Kevin Smith’s long-in-development Strange Adventures series had been scrapped. TVLine also hears that DC will be making some “tough calls” in future as they consider how to approach the ten-year plan that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently spoke of. “You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman — these are brands that are known everywhere in the world,” Zaslav said. “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team with a ten-year plan focusing just on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.“
