Green Lantern may not show up in the DCCU quite as soon as you hoped

Once it became clear that Warner Bros. was going to be crafting their own superhero universe with their stable of DC Comic characters, it was important for them to chart the direction those films would take, which included casting characters who wouldn't be seen for several years. Although some will be popping up in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, we already know that Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller will be playing The Flash, Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman, Dwayne Johnson will be playing Black Adam, and Ray Fisher will be playing Cyborg. One major character who has yet to have been cast is Green Lantern, which means that we may not be seeing the character quite as soon as we hoped.

Greg Silverman, the president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros, spoke with Entertainment Weekly for their BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE coverage and let fans know that if they're patient, it will all be worth it.

[Green Lantern] is an incredible character. He’s actually multiple incredible characters, there’s real opportunity there. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence. I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.

Unlike a few of the other heroes, Green Lantern won't even be mentioned in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, so when might we finally see DC's Emerald Knight on the big-screen? BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE producer Charles Roven has the answer:

Every beat of the movie is not yet worked out. So there’s the possibility that he may or may not be in Justice League 2. For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after.

We're still not sure exactly which Green Lantern will be popping when he first makes his appearance, but it's quite possible that we'll get to see many of our favourites as the Green Lantern-centric film will focus on the Green Lantern Corps themselves, which is the intergalactic military/police force who patrol the farthest reaches of the universe at the behest of a race of immortals residing on the planet Oa, known as The Guardians. As Green Lantern has always been one of my favourite DC heroes, it's a little disappointing that we have a bit of a wait ahead of us, but if the wait is worth it, all the power to them. Just don't make the super-suit animated!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS is set for a June 19, 2020 release.
