Over the years, we've seen the TRANSFORMERS franchise crossover with many others, including G.I. JOE, STAR TREK, GHOSTBUSTERS, and more, and the latest crossover will find the Robots in Disguise meeting up with BACK TO THE FUTURE's Marty McFly and Doc Brown.
It was announced today that Hasbro, Universal Brand Development, and Amblin Entertainment would be bringing us a collaboration between TRANSFORMERS and BACK TO THE FUTURE which will turn one of cinema's most famous vehicles into a Transformer. A new four-part comic series from IDW will find bring the two franchises together as it turns the time-traveling Delorean into an Autobot. Here's the synopsis: "Marty McFly has just returned to his home sweet home, Hill Valley 1985, and everything's looking up… that is, until Marty and his friend Doc Brown's time machine attracts the attention of the Decepticons! With one small mistake, Marty finds himself thrust into adventure to stop the Decepticon plot in the past, present, and future… all with the help of a new time machine: the Autobot, Gigawatt!" In addition to the comic series, there will naturally be a toy to go along with it. You can check out the cover of the first issue, as well as a look at the Gigawatt Transformer toy, below.
Gigawatt stands at 5.5 inches in Robot mode and is able to convert to Time Machine mode in just 17 steps. Gigawatt also includes "a blaster and whip antennae accessories, and features movie-inspired details from the film, including Doc Brown-style goggles, a flux capacitor chest piece, and time circuits." While in Time Machine mode, "the gullwing doors open and wheels rotate from vertical to horizontal to produce a hovering effect as seen at the end of the film."
The Gigawatt figure will be available for pre-order at Walmart.com (although the link doesn't appear to be live at the moment), with only 1,985 pieces available in honor of the 35th anniversary of the release of BACK TO THE FUTURE — July 3, 1985, A second variant release will follow on October 1, 2020, which also happens to be when the first issue of the comic series will drop.
