Amazon has announced that the English-language remake of the 2014 Austrian psychological horror film Goodnight Mommy will be released through Prime Video on September 16th – a date which is four years and eleven days after the day when we first heard that Matt Sobel (Take Me to the River) would be directing the remake from a screenplay he was writing with Kyle Warren.
Naomi Watts (King Kong 2005) stars in this new version of Goodnight Mommy and is joined in the cast by Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti (Big Little Lies), Jeremy Bobb (The Outsider), Crystal Lucas-Perry (Mimesis Nosferatu), and Peter Hermann (Younger).
The original Goodnight Mommy, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, told the following story:
Elias and his twin brother Lukas arrive at their mother’s house to find her face covered in bandages − the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery. Lukas delights in their mother’s uncharacteristically lax house rules, but in Elias’ mind, a dreadful thought takes root: the sinking suspicion that this woman beneath the gauze, who’s making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t really their mother.
Amazon Studios produced the new Goodnight Mommy with Animal Kingdom and Playtime. David Kaplan, Joshua Astrachan, Valery Guibal, and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert are the individual producers. Watts served as an executive producer alongside Franz and Fiala.
With the release date of the Goodnight Mommy remake just a month and a half away, we should be seeing a trailer for this one very soon. In the meantime, let us know whether or not you’re looking forward to this movie by leaving a comment below.
The original movie was very unnerving, and not in a way that I want to experience again. One viewing was enough for me. So I can’t say I’m hyped for the remake, although the involvement of Naomi Watts has me slightly intrigued.
