Good Madam trailer: South African horror film is getting a Shudder release

The Shudder streaming service has unveiled a trailer for Good Madam, a South African supernatural horror movie they’ll be releasing as a Shudder Original on Thursday, July 14th. That trailer is now embedded above, so check it out to get an idea of what sort of terror will be reaching Shudder in just under a month.

Good Madam was directed by Jenna Cato Bass, who shares writing credit with the film’s cast members Babalwa Baartman, Chumisa Cosa, Chris Gxalaba, Khanyiso Kenqa, Steve Larter, Sizwe Ginger Lubengu, Nosipho Mtebe, Kamvalethu Jonas Raziya, Sanda Shandu, Siya Sikawuti, and Peggy Tunyiswa. They worked together to craft a story that centers on

Tsidi, a single mother, is forced to move in with her estranged mother Mavis, a live-in domestic worker caring obsessively for her catatonic white ‘Madam’ in an affluent Cape Town suburb. As Tsidi tries to heal her family however, a sinister specter begins to stir.

The story is told in Xhosa and English, with English subtitles.

The press release from Shudder notes that Good Madam is “a genre film entrenched in the ordinary everyday horrors in our society. The film explores the generational trauma inherent to South African culture, sprawling from the past to the present day, with chilling delivery and haunting results.”

A collaboration between Fox Fire Films, Sanusi Chronicles, and Causeway Films in association with Salmira Productions and Strange Charm, Good Madam was produced by Baartman, Cato Bass, Kristina Ceyton, and Samantha Jennings. Salman Al-Rashid, Sam Frohman, Richard Mansell, David Bass, and Jason Newmark served as executive producers.
