To paraphrase the guy who said it first, the reports of the GREEN HORNET’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Despite being left for dead just last month, Seth Rogen’s GREEN HORNET soldiers on at Sony and today has found a new director to replace Stephen Chow, who left the project back in December. Sony has hired Michel Gondry to direct the film based on a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Chow was expected at one point to continue to star in the film as Kato but it’s unclear if that is still the plan. It would certainly be the largest and most ambitious film to date for Gondry whose last feature, BE KIND REWIND, was a critical and commercial flop. Though to be fair, his film prior to that, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, was absolute genius. I’m not sure what to think of this move. On the one hand I absolutely adore the moxie of Sony hiring a director known more for his originality and artistry but on the other I wonder if Gondry can pull it off? Of course many may have wondered the same thing about David Gordon Green and his ability to direct PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and look how that worked out. What do you think about this decision?
