Golden Globe nominations: Vice, Black Panther, A Star is Born score big

The awards race kicked into full gear recently with the announcements from several major award outlets, and now one of the biggest around has just unveiled their nominees – the Golden Globes. Considered the more fun and laid back cousin to the Oscars, bigger movies like BLACK PANTHER, MARY POPPINS and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY had shots at earning spots next to indie darlings like THE FAVOURTIE, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK and more, and that's exactly what happened.

BLACK PANTHER scored a major nomination for Best Picture (along with score and song nominations) , as did the other three crowd pleasers, with the wildly successful A STAR IS BORN earning numerous nominations. The latter earned nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Best Original Song (no Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott?!) for a total of five nominations. That's just one less than the six nominations for VICE, which scored in several categories including Best Picture (Comedy), Director (Adam McKay) and for Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell

Other notable nominees include movies like POPPINS, CRAZY RICH ASIANS and BLACKKKLANSMAN, which scored key nominations for Best Picture, Director (Spike Lee),  Best Actor (John David Washington) and Supporting Actor (Adam Driver). Some other pleasant surprises are Constance Wu and Elsie Fischer earning Actress nominations for CRAZY RICH ASIANS and EIGHTH GRADE., the latter of which was criminally under-nominated everywhere else.

On the TV side of things, expected contenders like MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, BARRY and SHARP OBJECTS getting numerous nominations. Also nice to see is some love given to the excellent thriller BODYGUARD, with the show nominated for Best Drama Series while star Richard Madden secured a Best Actor (Drama) nomination. And I guess there's more love out there for KOMINSKY METHOD than I thought. What an odd showing in the races, this show has.
