I'm hyped for this weekend's release of GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, and my excitement is enhanced by the fact that we already know there's more big monster action coming after this one, and we know when it's going to arrive. GODZILLA VS. KONG, a film that will see the Godzilla of KING OF THE MONSTERS and the 2014 GODZILLA going up against the Kong introduced in KONG: SKULL ISLAND, is scheduled to reach theatres on March 13, 2020.
Although these creatures have clashed before, in 1962's KING KONG VS. GODZILLA, some fans are wondering how this Kong can have any chance against this Godzilla. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS director Mike Dougherty has also co-written GODZILLA VS. KONG with Terry Rossio, and he recently told Bloody-Disgusting that,
I think part of the fun of watching that fight go down is we are witnessing a potential underdog battle. We’re looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. … But then if you really take the time to look at Kong as a character, it’s like, okay, in SKULL ISLAND he was an adolescent, so he was still growing. So who knows how big he is since the 1970s when they first met him? Kong is extremely intelligent. As a primate, he’s a tool-user. So he’s got speed, he’s got agility, he might have some good size. And I like a good underdog battle."
Dougherty went on to compare the fight to Rocky fighting Ivan Drago in ROCKY IV.
However the battle goes – whether Kong is able to pull out some surprises or if Godzilla just beats the hell out of him – the marketing for it promises that it's going to be a devastating conflict. The film magazine Film Stories spotted GODZILLA VS. KONG promo art at a licensing expo, and this art features the tagline "One Will Fall".
I really want to see Godzilla and Kong fight (again), but I don't want to see either of them hurt the other. I'm very conflicted going into this match-up.
Directed by Adam Wingard, GODZILLA VS. KONG has the following synopsis:
In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.
The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Demian Bichir, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Shun Oguri. Plus two of cinema's all-time greatest monsters.
