It took some time but Godzilla Vs. Kong crossed a domestic milestone at the box office that should be celebrated given the fact that the pandemic has truly made moviegoing suffer for over a year. It took 12 weekends, but monster mash-up crossed $100 million at the domestic box office.
Godzilla Vs. Kong is the second film to achieve this feat during the pandemic after A Quiet Place Part II which did it in three weekends. Godzilla Vs. Kong grossed $250,000 over the weekend at 512 theaters which pushed the film over the $100 million milestone. The film was the first release during the pandemic that gave an indication that moviegoing was on its way back. Even though the film was also released on the HBO Max streaming service the Wednesday before Easter, the movie still managed to open to $48.1 million in its first five days. This was before Los Angeles and New York City were at 100% auditorium capacity so the opening was significant given its limitations.
The production budget on Godzilla Vs. Kong is reportedly $155-200 million but worldwide grosses have pushed the movie to $442.5 million globally. The film needed to gross about $330 million worldwide to break even so Warner Bros. has to be happy with its performance during an unprecedented worldwide pandemic. Had the film come out in a healthy box office climate, the numbers would've obviously surged higher but we have to call this a win for Warner Bros given the circumstances.
Did YOU catch Godzilla Vs. Kong in the theaters? Are YOU surprised the film crossed $100 million domestically?
