The Monsterverse won’t just unfold on the big screen. It was announced earlier this year that Apple TV+ had given a series order to a new original live-action TV series based on Godzilla and the other titans found in the theatrical franchise. Variety has now reported that Matt Shakman has signed on to direct the first two episodes of the Godzilla TV series
Matt Shakman is best known for directing Marvel’s WandaVision series for Disney+, but he’s also helmed episodes of Six Feet Under, The Boys, Mad Men, Fargo, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and more. He’s also slated to direct the new Star Trek sequel that’s currently in development. In addition to directing the first two episodes of the Godzilla TV series, Matt Shakman will also serve as an executive producer on the series. Legendary Television will produce the Godzilla TV series with Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) onboard as co-creators and executive producers, with Black also serving as showrunner.
Following the “thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real,” the Monsterverse series “will explore one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.” Legendary’s Monsterverse began in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and expanded to include Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The MonsterVerse franchise has grossed close to $2 billion worldwide so far. A new Monsterverse movie is in development with Adam Wingard returning to direct and it was recently announced that Dan Stevens would be starring in the movie. There’s also an anime Skull Island series in development for Netflix.
