Godzilla: King of the Monsters Michael Dougherty

Godzilla will be taking on fellow giant monsters Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan in TRICK 'R TREAT director Michael Dougherty's GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, the upcoming sequel to the 2014 GODZILLA, and if they were the only monsters in the movie I would be perfectly fine with that. In fact, I was expecting them to be the only monsters in the movie. But as it turns out, it's going to have several more monsters wreaking havoc around the planet. We've seen glimpses of these other monsters in promotional materials, and when our own Eric Walkuski visited the set of the movie he saw a computer monitor that had the names of monsters called Baphomet, Typhoon, Abaddon, Bunyip, and Methuselah listed on it… along with the Kong of KONG: SKULL ISLAND.

How many monsters will be busting loose in this movie? We don't have an official count, but in the new TV spot embedded below Ken Watanabe's character informs us that there are seventeen monsters out there. Seventeen and counting.

Written by Dougherty, his KRAMPUS collaborator Zach Shields, and GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND's Max Borenstein, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS centers on

the heroic efforts of Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species thought to be mere myths rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film stars Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Zhang Ziyi, Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Randy Havens, Jonathan Howard, Anthony Ramos, Bradley Whitford, Elizabeth Ludlow, and the previously mentioned Ken Watanabe, with Jason Liles, Richard Dorton, and Alex Maxson providing the motion capture performances for Ghidorah's three heads.

We'll find out how much screen time all of these monsters have when GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS reaches theatres on May 31st.
