Godzilla: King of the Monsters promo teases Mothra

With the release of KONG: SKULL ISLAND on Blu-ray, Warner Bros. is ramping up the promotion for their next monster slam-fest – GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. The film doesn’t come out for another 2 years, and that’s plenty of time to drop little hints about the upcoming creature feature, including ones relating to all the new monsters the big lizard will face.

The Twitter page for Monarch – the secretive organization that deals in the existence of taller-than-average animals – recently dropped a little tease for one of ‘Zillas most iconic foes/allies – Mothra.

The winged beast first made an appearance in its own movie – MOTHRA – in 1961, before being featured in a crossover with Godzilla in 1964’s MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA. Mothra fought Godzilla when the latter attacked Japan, making the former the hero of the tale. The monster stands as one of the most popular in the genre and has been featured in numerous GODZILLA films over the years. In KING OF THE MONSTERS, Godzilla will have another battle with the creature, along with Rodan and Ghidorah.

The tease looks like some sort of etching in stone – and anyone who stayed after the credits in KONG already saw something similar to this, as well as for Rodan and Ghidorah. But this picture is clearer and gives a better sense of where the design is headed. Chances are we will see more teasers like this for the other two monsters in the future, and already I can imagine all these flying monsters making Godzilla swat at them while they soar above, teasing the non-flying lizard. That's just mean, flying monsters.

Directed by Michael Dougherty (TRICK R' TREAT), GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is set for March 22, 2019 and stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Millie Bobby Brown, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Kyle Chandler, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford and more.
