Godzilla (1997) coming to 4K Blu-ray this May

This May we will be hit with writer-director Michael Dougherty's (TRICK 'R TREAT, KRAMPUS) big-budget monster mash GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. The film is the sequel to Gareth Edward's hit take on GODZILLA which starred Bryan Cranston. And the film will lead up to director Adam Wingard's ultimate battle of the beasts, GODZILLA VS KONG which is all set to stomp your ass in May 2020.

But with all of this new GODZILLA hitting us, let's not forget that INDEPENDENCE DAY director Roland Emmerich directed a version of the classic movie monster back in 1997 with Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno. This take on the movie holds a special place in my heart because I was just the right age to enjoy the utter insanity when it first stomped into theaters. I owned the soundtrack and everything.

And it's with this cult-love of GODZILLA (1997) in mind that I'm excited to pass along word that Sony will be unleashing the mostly forgotten film on 4K Ultra HD combo pack (with Blu-ray and digital) this May. You can check out the cover art below along with a list of special features. After looking through all that, let us know if you plan to snag this film on Blu-ray this May.

Special features:

Audio commentary by visual effects supervisor Volker Engel and associate visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas

Behind the scenes of Godzilla with Charles Caiman

All-Time Best-of Godzilla Fight Scenes

“Heroes” music video by The Wallflowers

Here's the movie's synopsis:

Following French atomic bomb tests in the South Pacific, an unknown creature is spotted passing through the Panama Canal. Scientist Niko Tatopolous is called in to investigate the matter, and he quickly arrives at the conclusion that a giant, irradiated lizard has been created by the explosions. Godzilla then makes its way north, landing in Manhattan to begin wreaking havoc in the big city.

Roland Emmerich directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Dean Devlin from a story by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio based on Godzilla by Toho. Devlin produced and the film starred Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Kevin Dunn, Michael Lerner, and Harry Shearer. The movie will be hitting 4K Ultra HD combo pack (with Blu-ray and digital) vias Sony on May 14th.
