Boy! During an investor briefing on May 26, Sony president Jim Ryan revealed that the studio has three TV adaptations in the works. The first is a Horizon TV series happening on Netflix. The second is a TV series and film based on the Gran Turismo game series. The third, and perhaps the most anticipated, is a God of War TV series, which will dig its blades in on Amazon.
The God of War series revolves around Kratos, the demigod son of Zeus, and a mortal woman named Callisto. After exacting vengeance against the Gods of Olympus, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. In this harsh, unforgiving world, he must fight to survive and teach his son to do the same.
Universally beloved by gamers of all kinds, the God of War series began on Sony’s Playstation 2 console. Several games belonging to the God of War franchise have been released across multiple console and handheld gaming platforms throughout the years. Each chapter has set Kratos against new threats and built upon his extensive skill set. Sony rebooted God of War in 2018 and introduced Kratos’ son, Atreus, who is a hybrid of the Greek and Norse pantheon. With plenty of mythology to explore, a God of War TV series could result in an expansive (and expensive) fantasy action epic for Amazon.
Rumors about a God of War TV series have circulated for quite some time. Whispers about the show’s potential have cast Dwayne Johnson as Kratos, though he is not attached to the show in any way. Sony is looking to expand its reach beyond video games, with Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima being among several released or in development projects.
