Netflix is staying in the Jim Mickle business. The streaming service has worked with Mickle on the film In the Shadow of the Moon and the series Sweet Tooth, and now The Hollywood Reporter says they have acquired his latest movie God Country, an adaptation of the 2017 Image Comics limited series that was written by Donny Cates with Geoff Shaw handling the artwork.
The six issue comic book told the story of
Emmet Quinlan, an old widower afflicted by dementia and violent outbursts. When a tornado hits his West Texas town, Quinlan is rejuvenated thanks to an enchanted sword he finds in the wreckage, but now he must use it to protect his family and what remains of the town against terrifying otherworldly creatures seeking its power.
Mickle will be directing the adaptation from a screenplay he wrote with Cates.
God Country is being produced by Mary Parent and Ali Mendes of Legendary, Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer of AfterShock, and Mickle and Linda Moran, producing through their banner Nightshade. Netflix and Legendary previously worked together on Enola Holmes. In addition to God Country, they’re currently collaborating on an Enola Holmes sequel and an adaptation of the anime Gundam.
I haven’t read God Country myself, but JoBlo’s own Steve Seigh ranked it as “one of my favorite comic book stories of all time”. So it sounds like we’ve got something awesome coming on our way – and when it arrives, we’ll be able to watch it on the Netflix streaming service.
In addition to In the Shadow of the Moon and Sweet Tooth, Mickle has previously directed Mulberry St, Stake Land, We Are What We Are, and Cold in July. He also co-created the Joe R. Lansdale-inspired series Hap and Leonard.
