Didn’t I JUST say that we’d be seeing a lot of Kevin Costner in 2014?
Yet another Superbowl spot has dropped (after yesterday’s NOAH) and it’s the fittingly relevant DRAFT DAY, starring Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, Sam Elliott, Rosanna Arquette, and Tom Welling. The Ivan Reitman directed sports flick is no doubt a perfect fit for audiences watching the big game this Sunday, but will it be for all other moviegoers? Like a cross between MONEYBALL and ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, this looks to have all the ingredients for a solid hit for the genre, even if it hits in the off season.
Take a look:
Here’s the synopsis:
On the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner) has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL. Also featuring Jennifer Garner and NFL & ESPN on-air talent Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock, Deion Sanders, Rich Eisen, Mel Kiper and Chris Berman.
Out of all the roles that Costner has coming up, this feels like the most fitting for his age and stature. That’s not to say he isn’t viable in other genres, but his casting here is a no-brainer. He’s got the perfect balance of charisma mixed with a patriarchal wise man with attitude. So, basically, he’s Yoda, minus the lightsaber and cloak. Perhaps the role is almost too easy for Costner, but ultimately these kinds of films are made to be crowd pleasers for the most part, not challenging thought pieces.
DRAFT DAY hits theaters on April 11, 2014.
