Marc Maron hopes GLOW gets a Netflix movie to wrap up the series

The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are out of a job as Netflix officially cancelled the series yesterday, which reversed their earlier decision to renew the series for a fourth and final season. Although production on the final season of GLOW had been underway for several weeks before it was forced to shut down due to COVID-19 earlier this year, it would seem that we've seen the last of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), Sam Syliva (Marc Maron), and the rest. That said, Marc Maron has called upon Netflix to let them produce a GLOW movie in order to wrap up the series.

The actor spoke with fans on Instagram to share his hope that the streaming service will allow them to complete their story.

I think what they should do is just, okay so you don’t wanna do the show anymore, but let us make a movie, right? Let us wrap it up in a two-hour Netflix movie. They had the whole season laid out. We know where it’s gonna go. Why don’t you give the showrunners and the writers and the cast an opportunity to finish the story in a movie, right? I mean I think that would be the best thing.

Following up a cancelled series with a movie isn't out of the realm of possibility, as Netflix did much the same thing with Sense8. That particular series was cancelled after two seasons, but after the outcry from fans, Netflix produced a Sense8 movie in order to resolve the story. The main reason for the cancellation of GLOW has been blamed on COVID-19, as the production couldn't exactly adhere to pandemic safety protocols given the show's subject matter and large ensemble cast. In a statement, series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch said, "COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone. There’s a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again." Well the logistics of producing a show like GLOW during a pandemic can't be easy, I would hope that Netflix is receptive to the idea of a feature-film further down the road in order to give fans a little closure.
