When Marvel was casting for Star-Lord in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, many names were floating around before Chris Pratt nabbed the part. One name not mentioned at the time was Glenn Howerton (Dennis from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), but apparently the actor did read for the part. In an interview with Zap2It, Howerton was asked if he has a yearning for more big screen parts like the ones his co-star Charlie Day has had recently. In his response, Glenn Howerton revealed that he had an audition for SUPERMAN RETURNS and for the lead in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
"I think ten years ago I auditioned for the Superman reboot. I did audition recently for 'Guardians of the Galaxy', to play the role Chris Pratt is playing. And I know the director of that movie is supposedly a big 'Sunny' fan, which is cool."
Howerton doesn't say which part he auditioned for in SUPERMAN RETURNS, but I'm assuming it would have been a smaller role and not the lead. I could see him as Star-Lord, but Chris Pratt is the better choice in my opinion and I think he's really going to own the part.
Glenn Howerton might not have landed parts in those comic book movies, but there is one role he would really like:
"I think playing something like The Riddler would definitely feel like it was in my wheelhouse."
Well Glenn, you're going to have to get in line behind Justin Timberlake because he called dibs on the part first. It's always fascinating to read about different roles actors auditioned for but didn't get. Glenn Howerton might have been an interesting choice for Star-Lord, but in this case I think Marvel made the right decision going with Chris Pratt.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is in theaters August 1st, 2014, and the ninth season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia just started a few weeks ago on FXX.
