The game’s afoot as Netflix releases a new look at the long awaited sequel to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which is heading to Netflix on December 23rd. Johnson discussed the TIFF-bound sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, with Tudum and talked about how this entry is even more inspired by the Agatha Christie novels that he is a tremendous fan of. His aim, this time around, was to make the film centered around an exotic island getaway-gone-horribly-wrong.
Whereas Knives Out centered around a mystery surrounding a rich family, this time, the whodunnit focuses on a rich tech billionaire and his circle of friends. Miles Bron, played by Edward Norton, is said billionaire who invites his closest friends to a coastal getaway at Porto Heli, Greece, which the movie filmed on location. The problem is somebody ends up dead, and Detective Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig reprising the role, is called in to solve the case.
Craig says that we get to see more of Blanc this time around. The former James Bond actor explains,
You definitely get to know him a little bit better. In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”
The huge cast joining Craig for this entry will include Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.
Johnson adds that his Agatha Christie inspiration included giving this one a different look and feel than the last movie. Christie’s novels, featuring Detective Hercule Poirot, varied in tone over 33 novels, and the Knives Out series will no doubt follow a similar approach.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is set to premiere in select theaters on an unannounced date, then starts streaming on Netflix on December 23rd.
