The 2017 comedy Girls Trip became a surprise hit when it was released in the summer of that year, grossing $115.1 million at the domestic box office on a $19 million budget. A sequel has been talked about since its release but there has been no official confirmation…until now. Girls Trip 2 is happening with all of the ladies of the first film set to return.
While on Good Morning America discussing the 2022 Oscars which he is set to produce, Will Packer announced that a sequel is “underway” and it will be bringing back Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish. Packer said, “Can’t we all use a post-pandemic trip, my friend? I think that the time is actually right, and this is something I will tell you and break right now at GMA: the Girls Trip 2 sequel, we are underway.” Check out what else he shared with host Michael Strahan below!
“We are absolutely in the stages, the ladies are in, I just talked to the director. We are underway with Girls Trip 2, and now it’s just about what kind of trip do we take, right? Post-pandemic with all our favorite crazy ladies, what do we do with them? That’s what we got to figure out.”
The first Girls Trip was written by Tracy Oliver and Kenya Barris with Malcolm D. Lee at the helm. The film followed a group of four college friends as they try to reconnect at the Essence annual music festival in New Orleans. Hilarity ensues and the film not only became a hit with audiences, but critics loved the female-led comedy, gracing it with a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Comedy sequels are always concerning but I did enjoy the first film and wouldn’t mind going on another trip with these ladies. I just hope the script is worthy of another vacation and it does these actresses some justice by giving them good material.
