Ginger Snaps TV series will dig into werewolf history

Last October, it was announced that Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films was teaming with Copperheart Entertainment, the production company behind the Ginger Snaps trilogy, to develop a TV series based on the 2000 werewolf movie Ginger Snaps (watch it HERE). We haven’t heard anything more about the show over the last year, but in a new interview with The Guardian Ginger Snaps director John Fawcett, who serves as executive producer on the TV series, confirmed that it’s still in the works.

Fawcett said,

I’m making a Ginger Snaps TV show right now. I definitely want to go more into the back story of werewolves, and the challenge is in modernizing the story. The original film was lucky to end up with two amazing leads – Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle – who had such great chemistry. They were like the teenage Thelma and Louise.”

Anna Ssemuyaba is writing the show. Like the original Ginger Snaps, the TV series will focus on

sisters Ginger and Brigette, who are self-imposed outcasts in their hometown. Inseparable and fascinated with the macabre, they make a pact to escape their sleepy suburban home by sixteen or else take their own lives. But on the night of her first period, Ginger is attacked and infected by a werewolf which unleashes a monstrous kind of puberty. Brigette can’t understand this new version of her sister who is violent and sexual. As a bloody trail begins to form in Ginger’s wake, Brigette must find a way to curb her sister’s new cravings or risk losing her forever.

Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins played Ginger and Brigitte in the film.

Sid Gentle’s Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris are executive producing the Ginger Snaps TV series with Fawcett, Clark Peterson, and Copperheart’s Steve Hoban. Endeavor Content is handling worldwide sales on the show.

I’m not completely sold on the idea that Ginger Snaps, my favorite werewolf movie, should become a TV series, but I’ll definitely check it out whenever it’s ready to air.
