Absence doesn’t necessarily make the heart grow fonder, at least when it comes to masked murderers.
Revisiting the SCREAM franchise after a decade obviously hasn’t been the phenomenon the Weinsteins hoped (or the financial resuscitation they desperately need), and while the studio had intended SCREAM 4 to launch a new trilogy, it doesn’t look like Ghostface will be slashing anyone for a while. Unless it’s in a reboot.
Following up on E! Online‘s speculation that a reboot may have been more successful than a tardy sequel and will invariably be the direction the franchise goes, Moviehole got word from the inside about the current incarnation of the series: “The Scream franchise will likely end here, at least for the moment.“
The series could conceivably continue “even as a direct-to-dvd franchise” (which the Weinsteins seem to love, at least as a way to retain rights to properties), but the initially proposed SCREAM 5 and 6 are probably never going to emerge from the shadows and stab your face.
But don’t worry, genre lovers — besides another PIRANHA on the way, the Weinsteins are also working on remakes of SCANNERS, HELLRAISER, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (!!!), SCARY MOVIE, and… SHORT CIRCUIT.
