Check out a clip of the opening 5 minutes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Serving as a direct sequel to the original films, Ghostbusters: Afterlife followed a single mom and her two kids as they arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. With the film set to be released on home media next month, Sony Pictures have released the opening 5 minutes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife which you can check out above!

The opening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows Dr. Egon Spengler as he attempts to lure an entity into a trap, but as we quickly find out, things don’t go according to plan. While speaking with Empire, Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman said that they knew they wanted to open the film with some deadly stakes.

We knew from the beginning that we wanted to make a movie about the Spengler family. To open with Egon and to see someone die in the middle of trying to catch a ghost, which had not happened in the previous films. If my father’s point of view is that we should take this stuff seriously, then we should have a ghost kill a human and let the audience know that we’re not screwing around here.

With a mixture of new and returning characters, Jason Reitman wanted to make Ghostbusters: Afterlife a treat for old-school fans and people entering the franchise for the very first time. “This is for anyone who grew up on Ghostbusters and loves it,” Reitman said. “We wanted to make a movie for you. But also there’s a generation of young people that we wanted to give characters to latch on to, so that Ghostbusters could have a continued life that is out of mine and my father’s hands, and will be in the hands of other directors who can continue to make Ghostbusters movies.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on February 1, 2022, and will also be part of a massive Ghostbusters box-set that will include Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. After some outcry that Paul Feig’s reboot wouldn’t be included, that film will now be available as a digital download for those that purchase the set.
