In a perfect world, Ghostbusters: Afterlife would have hit theaters last year, but owing to the pandemic, the film experienced several delays and is now slated to debut this summer. Finger's crossed. The film will be a direct sequel to the original films, taking place thirty years after the events of Ghostbusters II as it revolves around a single mom (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Finn Wolfhard & McKenna Grace) who discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind after they move into a mysterious house in a small town.
Empire has released a new image from Ghostbusters: Afterlife which shows McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Logan Kim suited up and ready for action. Check that out below.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife was co-written and directed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, and Jason told Empire that one of the greatest moments of his life was when he was able to screen the film for his dad. "My father hasn’t been leaving the house much because of Covid," Reitman told Empire. "But he took a test, put on a mask and drove down to the Sony lot to watch the movie with the studio. And after, he cried, and he said, ‘I’m so proud to be your father.’ And it was one of the great moments of my life." Reitman added that although Ghostbusters: Afterlife will carry on the comedic traditions of the original movies, he also made sure that they'll feel as scary as them as well.
The feeling that I’ve kind of held onto is that while it is very funny, it really scared me. It was really my first experience with a horror film. I was at a Directors Guild meeting and I happened to be sitting next to Steven Spielberg – when I told him I was working on Ghostbusters, he out of nowhere said, ‘Library Ghost – top ten scares of all time.’ And it’s true.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is currently slated for a June 11, 2021 release.
