The anime adaptation GHOST IN THE SHELL is hitting American theaters soon, and director Rupert Sanders sat down with Empire to discuss how this film won't be like any other cross-country remake. He assured readers that the film is "a ride that's not just explosive and exciting, but also curious and reflective," reasserting that it won't be the "sh*t Hollywood version."
Although what a director says during a press tour is hardly a solid representation of the film itself, the fact that he's so outspoken about it gives us hope. Plus, we've been gifted a brand new still from the film showing a gun-toting Scarlett Johansson, which we can't complain about at all. Check it out below!
Johansson plays Major:
a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss handled the screenplay adaptation. Johansson's co-stars include Rila Fukushima, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Michael Wincott, Juliette Binoche, Beat Takeshi, Kaori Momoi, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.
GHOST IN THE SHELL will reach theatres on March 31, 2017.
