Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi thriller THE MARTIAN, based on the excellent novel by Andy Weir, is set to hit theaters this fall and today we have a peek at star Matt Damon in costume as the film's lead, Astronaut Mark Watney. Stranded on Mars after a mishap on the surface, Watney has to find a way to survive on the planet long enough to be rescued, which requires the full use of his scientific abilities, creative ingenuity, and a little bit of blind luck.
Suit up:
Having seen the trailer for THE MARTIAN at Cinemacon this year (read my description here) and having already read the book, I can say that this film is one of my most anticipated of the year. I'm sure there's some trepidation about whether or not Ridley Scott can deliver a straight sci-fi thriller of this nature as it's probably the most "mainstream" flick he's worked on in a good while, but based on the trailer alone, THE MARTIAN looks like an intensely fun ride that takes its cues directly from the book, including the humor and crazy survival science that serves as its foundation. Or, as Ridley Scott described to Empire: "I think of it as a 21st century Robinson Crusoe.”
THE MARTIAN features an outstanding cast, including Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier!), Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Pena, and Aksel Hennie. I can't wait for the trailer to drop, which should be soon, so that everyone can see what's in store for themselves. I think most folks will be surprised by how good it looks.
THE MARTIAN gets stranded in theaters on November 25, 2015.
