For a movie which reportedly cost $180 million and opens in less than a year from now, we're seen and heard very little of David Yates' TARZAN. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard as the titular character as well as Margot Robbie as Jane, but instead of focusing on the traditional Tarzan story of a man being raised by apes, TARZAN will take place a decade after Tarzan, now John Clayon III, left his home in the Congo and began living the life of a British gentleman in 1880's Victorian London.
USA Today has received the first look at the film, check out the new images below!
Come on Skarsgard, the least you could have done is work out a little for the role; you call those abs?! I'm kidding obviously, and maybe a little jealous. Alexander Skarsgard spent over four months undergoing a rigorous training regimen in order to get into Tarzan shape, but the actor sounds excited to be involved in a different take on the classic tale.
It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast, this is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.
Although the story takes place long after Tarzan has departed his African home, his early days will be seen in flashbacks and once he returns to the Congo after being invited back as an emissary of Parliament, there will be plenty of vine-swinging and cliff-jumping action as Jane and he embark on a new adventure. Don't expect Margot Robbie's Jane to be the typical damsel-in-distress, director David Yates says that Jane "in no way a passive partner to Tarzan. She’s a really strong, assertive, beautifully knowledgeable, very sexy modern woman who can more than look after herself. In a way, it’s a story of two human beings and how they save each other." Also starring in the film are Djimon Hounsou, Samuel L. Jackson, and Christoph Waltz.
TARZAN hits theaters on July 1, 2016.
