Senator Gary Hart was considered to be the front-runner in the 1988 race for the Democratic presidential nomination, but, after revelations of an extramarital affair with actress Donna Rice emerged, Hart later dropped out of the race. Michael Dukakis would go on to secure the Democratic nomination, but was defeated by George H. W. Bush in the election. Director Jason Reitman (UP IN THE AIR) will be tackling Gary Hart's dramatic rise and fall in THE FRONT RUNNER, which he has previously described as "a political comedy about the moment in our history when tabloid journalism and political journalism drove into the same lane." Principal photography on the film kicked off today and Hugh Jackman shared our first look at THE FRONT RUNNER via Twitter. Check it out below and don't forget to click to embiggen.
Based upon Matt Bai's "All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid," the upcoming film also stars Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), J.K. Simmons (WHIPLASH), Sara Paxton (THE INNKEEPERS), Ari Graynor (THE DISASTER ARTIST), Toby Huss (Carnivale), Josh Brenner (Silicon Valley), Kaitlyn Dever (Justified), Tommy Dewey (Casual), Mamoudou Athie (The Detour), Kevin Pollak (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) Mike Judge (King of the Hill), Molly Ephraim (Last Man Standing), Spencer Garrett (THANK YOU FOR SMOKING), Alex Karpovsky (Girls), Mark O’Brian (Halt and Catch Fire), and Steve Zissis (HER). "Like anyone, I look at the political landscape right now and just wonder how we got here," Reitman told Entertainment Weekly this summer. "There isn’t any one answer, but Matt Bai’s book about the Hart candidacy raised interesting questions and offered a thread I wanted to pull."
Hugh Jackman will next be seen as P. T. Barnum in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN on December 25, 2017.
