Dwayne Johnson is the latest film-star to make the leap to small-screen with Ballers, a new HBO series from Steve Levinson which will be premiering on June 21st. In it, Johnson plays a former football star by the name of Spencer Strasmore who mentors other current and former players in the business of football and living large. HBO dropped off the first trailer for the series, check it out!
Getting some major Entourage vibes here but I'm already looking forward to watching Rob Corddry bounce off Dwayne Johnson; some great potential for comedy there. At first glance it didn't seem like it would be my type of show but dammit if The Rock doesn't make me want to check it out; that man is one of the hardest working people in Hollywood, it's crazy. The series also stars Omar Benson Miller, John David Washington, Donovan Carter, Troy Garity, Jazmyn Simon, and Arielle Kebble; and yes that is feature-film director Peter Berg making an appearence, he also directed the pilot.
A synopsis for Ballers:
Looking at the lives of former and current football players, the show follows former superstar Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) as he gets his life on track in retirement while mentoring other current and former players through the daily grind of the business of football.
Ballers starts off its 10-episode debut season on June 21st, right after the season premiere of True Detective.
