Edge of Tomorrow 2 gets an official title; Cruise & Blunt returning

EDGE OF TOMORROW was one of those incredible little gems that didn’t make the biggest splash at the box office, but was still met with critical acclaim and gained a loyal following. People totally bought Tom Cruise in tech-suit killing aliens made of dangerous yarn, and despite not making as much as the studio hoped at the box office a sequel is on the way, a sequel that director Doug Liman has just shared the official title for.

While speaking with Collider about his upcoming movie THE WALL with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena, Liman revealed they have a script completed and a working title – LIVE DIE REPEAT AND REPEAT:

We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an “if”, it’s a “when.”

If ya’ll remember the movie’s marketing campaign, you remember that it went through a bit of a switch-up in titles, first changing from the graphic novel’s title, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, to EDGE OF TOMORROW. But then when the movie failed to break the bank Warner Bros. attempted to rebrand the movie in its video release, emphasizing the movie's tagline, LIVE. DIE. REPEAT, over EDGE. Now it seems everyone on board at WB seems keen on keeping the REPEAT version, as the movie did quite well on home video.

As for the movie Liman said the next movie is a sequel that’s a prequel, and went on to say that it will “revolutionize” how people approach making sequels. Made on a budget of $170 million, EDGE made $100 million here and $370 million globally, so those home video numbers surely helped gained much of the production budget back. No word yet on when production will begin, with Cruise working on M:I 6 and Blunt on MARY POPPINS RETURNS.

I gotta say EDGE OF TOMORROW really was one of the cooler treats of 2014, which sadly was bogged-down by coming out in the same timeframe as MALEFICENT and FAULT IN OUR STARS, during what was already a packed summer. Though I’m pumped for the sequel, I must admit, that title makes me squirm a bit. It reminds me of the tagline for Tugg Speedman’s (Ben Stiller) SCORCHER 6 in TROPIC THUNDER: “Here we go again…again.” It just doesn’t have the same effectiveness or elegance as EDGE OF TOMORROW. Oh well, I don’t work in the marketing department. Maybe people really do like their movie titles to sound like shampoo instructions.
