So for THE DUFF to work, we are to believe that people could somehow possibly think that Mae Whitman is ugly and fat. This movie is going to be full of so many unlikeable characters I don't know how anyone could sit and watch it without shouting expletives at the screen. While I am sure the movie will do some backtracking in the end and (obvious spoiler alert) tell us it doesn’t matter what people think and real beauty is inside you, it doesn’t help its convoluted argument when the main girl we are to sympathize with is drooling over the guy who labeled her to begin with (but he's shirtless so it’s OK now).
Here's the official synopsis:
Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as ‘The DUFF’ (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends (Skyler Samuels & Bianca Santos). Now, despite the words of caution from her favorite teacher (Ken Jeong), she puts aside the potential distraction of her crush, Toby (Nick Eversman), and enlists Wesley (Robbie Amell), a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself. To save her senior year from turning into a total disaster, Bianca must find the confidence to overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison (Bella Thorne) and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s DUFF.
Holy sh*t they actually said "we are all someone’s DUFF." I digress, maybe MEAN GIRLS needed an update to include "rocker" as a label. I'm not the audience for this obviously; it just came off as pretty harmful to me but maybe the road to redemption is long with this one.
Check out the first poster below for the movie that also also stars Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samuels, Nick Eversman, Allison Janney, Romany Malco and Ken Jeong. It should be arriving in 2015.
