The granddaddy of all awards shows – the Academy Awards – is but a few weeks away, and there are still plenty of other awards to give out to last year’s best films. Patton Oswalt hosted the Writers Guild Awards last night, and much like other guild awards, the results here are considered a precursor to what could happen on Oscar night. Things now look very good for GET OUT and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, both of which walked away with Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. James Ivory’s work on CMBYN was expected to pick up the win, as it is at the Oscars, where it goes up against MOLLY’S GAME, LOGAN, THE DISASTER ARTIST and MUDBOUND. However, GET OUT is coming out on top against some fierce competition in LADY BIRD and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, as all three are strong contenders to win. If all goes like last night did, we could be saying “Oscar-winner Jordan Peele” quite soon.
There were plenty of other winners last night as well, with shows like BIG LITTLE LIES, VEEP and BOJACK HORSEMAN taking home awards. Take a look at the full list below, where some of the best scripts of the year were awarded to writers to who spent many a’ night alone in a dark room, illuminated by nothing but the cold glow of a computer screen.
