Director Robert Eggers broke onto the scene in a big way with his 2015 horror movie THE WITCH, and now fans don’t have to wait much longer to see what he has in store next. A24 has dropped the first look at his new mysterious movie, THE LIGHTHOUSE, starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. If you were hoping the image would give you more details as to what the movie is about other than a lighthouse and starring these two actors then…at least you will be able to admire the black and white style.
We know precious little about the movie other than what the image contains – which is Dafoe and Pattinson play lighthouse keepers in the 19th Century and Eggers shot the movie in black and white. The two actors are looking especially hardened by the tough life of lighthouse keepin’, gaunt and grizzled and sporting some impressive facial hair.

The movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival here in a few weeks as part of the Directors’ Fortnight section, so releasing this first image so close to that debut means A24 is keeping things pretty close to the chest. Fans of THE WITCH should expect that kind of approach, as the movie utilized and ominous atmosphere, an underlying sense of dread to make audiences terrified while giving as little away as possible. Who’s to say THE LIGHTHOUSE will be of the same ilk as THE WITCH, but I’m certainly interested in what Eggers has cooked up.
After this Eggers also has a remake of NOSFERATU with Anya Taylor-Joy on the docket, which seems right up his alley given he’s already demonstrated a knack for period horror films. We will get to hear more about this latest from him in the coming weeks when the movie premieres, so stick around to see if his newest work lives up to his last.
