George R.R. Martin reveals the Game of Thrones franchise is shaped by the HBO Max shake-up at Warner Bros.

As 2022 comes to an end, it’s interesting to reflect on the year at Warner Bros with the merger with Discovery making so many changes. The biggest ones coming to the DC cinematic universe and a shake-up of the programming on the studio’s streaming platform, HBO Max. The creator of the massive hit, Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, is now reportedly updating on the state of the franchise as HBO Max continues to rearrange its content.

According to Deadline, Martin has said that the future of the series is shaped by the tumultuous decisions being made at Warner Bros. But, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing for fans clamoring for more Game of Thrones. Martin says that in addition to House of the Dragon getting renewed for a second season, but also, “some [spinoffs] are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon.” He also says that while some are moving faster, some are also getting shelved, though not necessarily dead. “You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. [Though] all the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

HBO, under the new management of David Zaslav, has been canceling shows like Westworld, Minx, and Love Life. There have been shows and movies that were underperforming that have been silently taken off the platform with the downsizing. The DC film branch is notably making changes with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the controls, much to the chagrin of fans wanting to see the current universe continue.

Martin gave his update on his blog, Not a Blog, where he also assures fans he’s currently at work on season 2 of House of the Dragon. He also says the project, Wild Cards, is still in development at Peacock. Although, there is no update yet after claiming his Winds of Winter novel is three-quarters done.
