George Lucas’ reaction to the Star Wars Episode 7 teaser may surprise you

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

By now, we have all been able to have a reaction, positively or negatively, to the first teaser trailer for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS. Some felt nostalgia and others saw more of the same encountered in the prequels. But, there is one person we have yet to hear from regarding J.J. Abrams's first foray into the STAR WARS mythos. What does George Lucas think about the trailer?

One would have expected a blessing of some sort from the man who invented STAR WARS but we got a much different reaction. Page Six asked Lucas about the teaser and he said he has not seen it yet and doesn't plan to watch the trailer.

“Because it’s not in the movie theater. I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there. I plan to see it when it’s released.”

Lucas has clearly separated himself quite a ways from STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS and his entire empire overall. Once Disney took over his company, Lucas was not kidding when he said he was stepping away. Granted, some people are probably pretty happy that he is not directing or involved with the new films, but it strikes me as sad that the filmmaker who changed modern movies forever has not idea where his creation is headed.

Lucas was said to be involved as a consultant on the new films, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or, maybe he doesn't want to sour anyone with his take on the movie lest the trolls mount an assault on anything Lucas does or does not like in Abrams' film. Either way, this is not what I hoped would become of George Lucas' legacy with STAR WARS. Hopefully he likes it when he finally sees it with the rest of us.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS opens on December 18, 2015.
