Can we consider this the first pre-release review of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS? Probably not, but's it's fun to think about George Lucas sitting in a theater watching a Star Wars film that he had almost nothing to do with, experiencing it for the first time like so many of us have over the past few decades. During an interview with THR, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that George Lucas has finally seen the film and that he "really liked it."
Kathleen Kennedy also said that Lucas will be attending both the Los Angeles and London premieres, but that its been touch for Lucas to watch "this go on without his direct involvement. At the same time, he really wanted to step away, [but] if there's one thing I've learned about George it's that he's never, ever held back. Having him 100 percent on board is up to him and he can't do that unless he's running everything." Earlier in the week George Lucas spoke with The Washington Post about keeping his distance from the production.
You’re either the dictator or you’re not. And to do that would never work, so I said ‘I’m going to get divorced.’ . . . I knew that I couldn’t be involved. All I’d do is make them miserable. I’d make myself miserable. It would probably ruin a vision — J.J. [Abrams] has a vision, and it’s his vision.
It'll be interesting to hear Lucas talk about the film in more detail once it's been released, because at this point, even the creator of the whole damn franchise can't say anything concrete without Disney's snipers descending upon him. Now that you know that George Lucas liked the film, do you consider that a good sign or a bad one?
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
