XYZ Films has acquired the North American distribution rights to the horror comedy Gatlopp: Hell of a Game, and according to The Hollywood Reporter the company is planning to release the movie sometime later this year. Directed by Alberto Belli from a screenplay written by Jim Mahoney (The Orville), who also stars in the movie, Gatlopp: Hell of Game follows
a group of four friends who get together for a nostalgic evening of fun and games after a decade apart. After one too many, they decide to play a drinking game — but soon realize that this is no ordinary game. Mischief leads to mayhem, and it’s revealed that if they don’t group together and face their inner demons, they will be forced to play for eternity.
Mahoney is joined in the cast by Emmy Raver-Lampman (Umbrella Academy), Jon Bass (Baywatch), Shelley Hennig (Unfriended), and Sarunas J. Jackson (Insecure).
Gatlopp: Hell of a Game was produced by Mark Lane and James Harris of Tea Shop Films, along with Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel of Signature Entertainment. Tomás Yankelevich, Peter Bevan, and Mariana Sanjurjo of Particular Crowd serve as executive producers.
XYZ Films’ Alex Williams said that Belli and Mahoney have crafted an “innovative, entertaining horror comedy” with this project. Gatlopp: Hell of a Game marks the feature directorial debut for Belli, who has previously directed shorts (including one called The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth – Dance Battle), music videos, and episodes of a series called The House of Flowers.
We’ve seen multiple horror movies based around board games and video games, but I’m not sure there’s ever been one specifically about a drinking game. I look forward to seeing more about Gatlopp: Hell of a Game when further information is revealed.
