Amidst a series of other devastating phenomena happening around the world, the international opioid crisis is among the most deadly, Believe it or not, it's a subject that has yet to be tackled on the big screen … until now. We've received word that ARBITAGE helmer Nicholas Jarecki has tapped Gary Oldman (DARKEST HOUR, SID AND NANCY), Armie Hammer (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, THE LONE RANGER) and Evangeline Lilly (ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, LOST) to star in DREAMLAND, an upcoming opioid thriller that's bound to turn some heads.
In DREAMLAND, three stories about the world of opioids collide: a drug trafficker arranges a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation between Canada and the US, an architect recovering from an OxyContin addiction tracks down the truth behind her son’s involvement with narcotics, and a university professor battles unexpected revelations about his research employer, a drug company with deep government influence bringing a new “non-addictive” painkiller to market— all in a thinking person's gangster tale of high and low.
DREAMLAND is written and directed by Jarecki as his follow-up to ARBITAGE, a thriller starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth, and Brit Marling, among others, that centers on a troubled hedge fund magnate who when becoming desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help. As of today, ARBITAGE is the highest grossing independent film to be released "day and date" in cinema history. Richard Gere also received a Golden Globe nomination for his powerful performance in the film.
“The devastating impact of the opioid crisis reaches all corners of society,” said Jarecki. “Gary, Armie, and Evangeline are the perfect performers to bring the human face of this epidemic to audiences everywhere.”
Principle photography for DREAMLAND is happening right now in Montreal and Detroit.
