Gareth Edwards’ “robot Star Wars” film may still happen

Way back in 2011, we learned that GODZILLA and MONSTERS director Gareth Edwards was planning on directing a low-budget sci-fi movie "about a young human child (probably around 5 years old) and a robot who travel across the galaxy in search of mankind’s origin in a world void of humanity and filled with robots." Of course this was before Edwards was tapped to helm ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, and he'll also be back behind the camera for GODZILLA 2, but producer Timur Bekmambetov is still hopeful that the film will get made someday.

While speaking with SlashFilm, Bekmambetov said, "It was the next project he wanted to make. He’s busy now with these big, giant movies, but I hope we’ll make it. I thought it was a very cool, very warm story."

Not much else is known about the movie, which was at one point titled FOREVER, however it has been described as a "robot Star Wars." Apparently Edwards even shot a test film for the project from a script by Dante Harper, who was recently hired to write Sony's Spider-Man-less VENOM film. I'm all for original sci-fi flicks, and like Bekmambetov, I also have my fingers crossed that Edwards will find time in his schedule to shoot this movie.

Edwards' ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY will be in theaters on December 16, 2016, while GODZILLA 2 is scheduled to open on June 8, 2018.
