Just last week, GODZILLA 2 was pushed back by nine months, to a release date of March 22, 2019. Now we know one reason why. Gareth Edwards, who also directed the first film, has dropped out of the project.
Edwards, who helmed STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE (coming this December), has had his fill of tentpole pictures and is looking to helm some smaller projects. And who can blame him, really? Leaping from GODZILLA onto freaking STAR WARS takes a toll on a man.
The current script was written by original writer Max Borenstein, who promises "bigger and even better things."
KONG: SKULL ISLAND is set to reach theatres on March 10, 2017, leading to GODZILLA VS. KONG on May 29, 2020. If all goes well (which it very well may not), other famous kaiju will be incorporated into the franchise.
