Shortly after cruising the red carpet of last night’s Met Gala 2019, Marvel has announced that GAME OF THRONES and BODYGUARD alum Richard Madden is in talks to star in THE ETERNALS. Reports of Madden being eyed for a role in the studio’s mysterious new project hail from The Wrap, who say that although Madden is expected to join the endeavor, his role is being kept under wraps at this time. Not long ago, it was reported that Angelina Jolie and THE BIG SICK star Kumail Nanjiani are also poised to star in the superhero flick based on the 1976 comic book series created by Jack Kirby.
The Eternals are often described as an offshoot of the transformative process that created sentient life on Earth. As the story goes, The Eternals were intended to be defenders of Earth by their creators, the Celestials. In time, an opposing force known as the Deviants were introduced as a way to secure the destruction of the goodly-natured beings. Marvel has hired Chloe Zhao (THE RIDER, SONGS MY BROTHER TAUGHT ME) to direct the tentpole superhero venture from a screenplay penned by RUIN scribes Matthew and Ryan Firpo.
Zhao’s version of THE ETERNALS is said to be focusing on the female Eternal known as Sersi, who Jolie is expected to play once her part in the film is officially confirmed.
While Madden has previously appeared in shows like MEDICI and BODYGUARD, most will know him for his role as the late Robb Stark for HBO’s GAME OF THRONES. He’s also set to appear alongside Taron Egerton’s Elton John, as the legendary entertainer's longtime manager, in Dexter Fletcher’s fantasy biopic ROCKETMAN. The spirited and sparkly musical drama is set to take theaters by storm beginning on May 24. Be sure to wear your best sequined suit to the theater when you see it.
