Game of Thrones Season 6 premiere date announced, plus renewal news

We've known for a while that Season 6 of Game of Thrones will premiere this April, but now HBO has officially announced that the critically-acclaimed fantasy series will return on April 24th. The network has announced that the fifth season of Veep and the third season of Silicon Valley will also kick off on the same night.

The upcoming season should reveal the fate of one of the show's fan-favorite characters, and will be based on material from the upcoming sixth novel The Winds of Winter. Author George R.R. Martin wasn't able to finish the book in time for the new season though, so it will also consist of original content not found in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

In other Game of Thrones news, it's being reported that HBO is in talks to bring the series back for a seventh and eighth season, which shouldn't come as a surprise since the series has been ratings success for the network, and earlier this year HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said there will probably be at least two more seasons. I'm about a season and a half behind Game of Thrones, so hopefully I'll be able to catch up before the next one starts.
