Remy LeBeau will finally get the chance to grace the big-screen with his presence in his own standalone X-MEN spin-off, at least, that's the hope. GAMBIT has had its share of issues over its long development process, with both Rupert Wyatt (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) and Doug Liman (EDGE OF TOMORROW) leaving the project behind after signing on to direct, but now, with Gore Verbinski (A CURE FOR WELLNESS) on-board, 20th Century Fox has given GAMBIT a brand-new release date.
If you're hoping for a little mutant action on Valentine's Day, you'll be pleased to know that the studio has slated GAMBIT for a February 14, 2019 release. Channing Tatum is still set to star as the New Orleans-based mutant with the ability to manipulate kinetic energy and turn objects into projectiles, and with Gore Verbinski in the director's chair, maybe GAMBIT can finally push forward. Before we get to GAMBIT however, there are already several X-MEN movies to keep us busy throughout 2018, including NEW MUTANTS on April 13, 2018, DEADPOOL 2 on June 1, 2018, and X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX on November 2, 2018.
Development on GAMBIT has been underway for several years, but it was proving difficult to capture the tone and voice of the character, and, when movies like DEADPOOL and LOGAN were able to successfully push boundaries, Channing Tatum said that it was decided that the script should be rewritten.
We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason. We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn’t seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down. Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script – we’ve just sort of started over.
Once again, GAMBIT will hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
