Gal Gadot was Margot Robbie’s choice to play Barbie

Gal Gadot is flattered that Barbie producer (and star) Margot Robbie wanted her to play the title character.

Gal Gadot Barbie

Mattel introduced a Wonder Woman Barbie decades ago, but we almost got the real thing, as Gal Gadot was poised to play the iconic blonde doll. As it turns out, she was the first choice of none other than Barbie producer and eventual star Margot Robbie, who said Gadot had “Barbie energy”, which is not to be confused with Kenergy.

Speaking with Flaunt, Gal Gadot maintained that she is absolutely flattered that Robbie wanted her to star in Barbie, which she had to turn down due to other commitments. “I adore Margot…Margot is one of those women who you just want to be friends with…She is so funny, warm, fun and smart and obviously so talented. She brings so much to the table. I would love to do anything with Margot and was very touched [by her comments]. She warmed my heart with everything that she said about me. I’m super excited for them, and I’m so excited for Barbie.” While Gadot did attend Barbie‘s Los Angeles premiere, she did not wear pink.

As for the praise that Margot Robbie heaped on Gal Gadot and why she wanted her as Barbie, she told Vogue in May, “Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.” Unfortunately, Gadot couldn’t even make it as one of the many fill-in-the-blank Barbies.

While some may not think Gal Gadot would have made a good Barbie – at least not compared to Robbie, who could very well sneak herself into the Best Actress race this awards season – her casting still would have been a far cry from the days when Amy Schumer was attached.

As it stands, Barbie has surpassed the $500 million mark at the domestic box office and the $1 billion mark worldwide, nipping at The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s spot as the highest-grossing movie of the year.

How do you think Gal Gadot would have done as Barbie? Do you think the movie would have done as well at the box office without Margot Robbie? Give us your take below!
