Damn! First Boardwalk Empire and now Justified!
Well, it looks like another great show is about to ride off into the sunset as FX president and general manager John Landgraf announced that their hit show, Justified, will be closing up shop after it’s sixth season. Landgraf made the announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour, saying that the decision was made by showrunner Graham Yost and star Timothy Olyphant.
“We talked about it a year ago and they felt that the arc of the show and what they had to say would be served by six seasons instead of seven and I regretfully accepted their decision,” said Landgraf.
My initial reaction to this is “that f*cking sucks!” but after six seasons I think Justified will be able to maintain its momentum and go out in style rather than overstaying its welcome, which has been a longtime curse for some shows. Having an end to work towards definitely helps structure a fitting finale as well, instead of it turning into a surprise rush to the finish (Arrested Development, anyone?). So, while I’m disappointed to see Justified go, I’m also happy that we still have two seasons left and a focused direction to close it out properly.
Olyphant will next be seen on the big screen in THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU on September 12, 2014. You can catch the fifth season of Justified on FX, Tuesdays at 10:00 PM ET/PT.
