It may have taken longer than we thought for George Miller to take the helm of the next installment of the Mad Max saga, but Furiosa has finally begun production. Chris Hemsworth took to Twitter to post an image of a Furiosa clapper board, indicating that production on the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel has begun.
Furiosa will chart the origins of Imperator Furiosa before she became one of Immortan Joe’s war captains and met up with Max Rockatansky in the 2015 film. Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing Furiosa in the Mad Max prequel, which will also star Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke, who was brought in to replace Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Beyond offering an origin story for Furiosa, plot details are rather scarce, but George Miller has previously told Deadline that the prequel is more of a saga than Mad Max: Fury Road.
All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga.
It’s been said that Chris Hemsworth will be playing “totally against type” as the lead villain of Furiosa, but nothing has been officially confirmed. Former New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that Furiosa will be “the biggest ever film to be made in Australia, supporting more than 850 local jobs and bringing in $350 million to the economy.” Furiosa will be released in theaters on May 24, 2024. I can’t wait!
