UPDATE: Warner Bros. just sent out a press release on Furiosa to confirm that filming is underway and unveil an official synopsis:
Principal photography is underway on Academy Award-winning filmmaker George Miller’s “Furiosa,” the much-anticipated return to the iconic dystopian world he created more than 30 years ago with the seminal “Mad Max” films, this time with an original new standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The new feature is being produced by Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner, together with the filmmaker’s “Fury Road” partners Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the title role, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.
As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Miller penned the script with “Mad Max: Fury Road” co-writer Nico Lathouris and produces alongside his longtime partner, Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Babe”). Miller’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes such longtime Australian collaborators as production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on “Mad Max: Fury Road,” as well as first assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris. The director of photography is Simon Duggan (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “The Great Gatsby”).
The original article follows:
Three weeks ago, cast member Chris Hemsworth announced that filming had begun on the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa, which is heading toward a May 24, 2024 theatrical release. Now a small batch of pictures from the set have shown up online to give us an early look at some of the vehicles and sets we’ll see in this return to the apocalyptic wasteland. The images can be seen in this Twitter embed:
Written and directed by Mad Max franchise mastermind George Miller, Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the Furiosa character Charlize Theron played in Mad Max: Fury Road. This is the biggest production ever for Australia and is expected to create 850 jobs and bring $350 million AUD (around $272 million USD) to the local economy.
Since the focus is on a different character, Miller said this will be a unique entry in the Mad Max franchise, but will still be familiar to fans. Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth are joined in the cast by Tom Burke.
Details on the plot are being kept under wraps, but Miller told Deadline that
Even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga.”
After looking at those images from the set of Furiosa, I understand what Miller means by calling this “uniquely familiar”.
Are you looking forward to a movie that covers 15 years in the life of the Furiosa character? Share your thoughts on this project by leaving a comment below. I would be more hyped if the Max character was involved, but I’m still looking forward to seeing more Miller mayhem.
