Mad Max: Fury Road is hailed as one of the best modern action movies and put George Miller back on the map. The Mad Max director, whose most recent movie is the Idris Elba/Tilda Swinton fantasy drama, Three Thousand Years of Longing, had announced after the success of Fury Road that he was interested in exploring the origins of the Charlie Theron character, Furiosa. The project eventually got the greenlight and commenced filming in June of this year.
WorldOfReel now reports that the prequel has now wrapped filming. With a four-month shoot, it’s natural to assume that stunts for the movie is complicated enough to be comparable to the Academy Award-nominated predecessor. Additionally, the film sports a $168 million budget according to IMDb, which is about the same as Fury Road.
Details of the plot are not yet known, but Anya-Taylor Joy is reported to be playing the younger role of the titular character. Aussie superstar Chris Hemsworth will be co-starring in a role not yet revealed. The only thing known for certain is the movie will provide the background to the Furiosa character and possibly show how she rose to become Immortan Joe’s war captain when we were first introduced to the character in Fury Road.
One of the miraculous things about Mad Max: Fury Road is the fact that George Miller, who had helmed every Mad Max, had approached this complicated, epic blockbuster at the ripe age of 70, effectively putting young action directors to shame with its mind-blowing ballet of car mayhem. Miller is currently 77 and there are rumors he may still make another Mad Max titled, Mad Max: Wasteland, although the director has been quoted as saying he may be done with that character.
Furiosa is slated to release in the summer of 2024.
